Obituary

Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Scanlan, passed away on May 11, 2020, 2 days before his 92 nd birthday at St. Joseph's Post Acute Care, Orchard Park, NY.   Born in Batavia, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Jones) Scanlan.

Msgr. Scanlan attended St. Peter's School in LeRoy, NY and graduated from LeRoy High School.  He attended Our Lady of Angels Seminary at Niagara University.  Msgr. Scanlan was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1953 in Buffalo, NY.

After ordination Msgr. Scanlan served as assistant pastor of Guardian Angels Parish in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico.  He was a professor at Notre Dame High School in Batavia, NY.  He then became assistant pastor at St. Lucy Parish in Buffalo and assistant director of the Spanish Speaking Apostolate.  Later he was assigned assistant pastor to St. Mary Parish in Batavia and served as chaplain at the United States Veteran's Hospital in Batavia.  He acted as assistant pastor at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Buffalo, St. John the Baptist in Kenmore before becoming pastor and St. Bartholomew in Buffalo.  In 1975 he was assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niagara Falls for 21 years before retiring from active administrative duties in January of 1997.

Msgr. Scanlan was active in many organizations including positions as diocesan coordinator of Latin American Lay Programs, director of PAVLA (Papal Volunteers for Latin America): moderator for the Foundation for International Cooperation and the First Saturday Club.  He spent five years with the Division for Latin American in Washington and served at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  He was a spiritual director for the Legion of Mary in Niagara County and a member of the Priests' Council.

In his retirement, he continued to serve at St. Stanislaus Kostka, Holy Trinity and St. Bernard's Churches.  In addition, he became the Chaplin at Stella Niagara Educational Park, serving under the Sisters of Saint Francis.  In 2012, he retired to the O'Hara Priest Residence in Tonawanda, NY, where he resided until 2017.  He then moved to the McCauley Residence in Kenmore, NY, where he mentored sick and needy residents.

Msgr. Scanlan is survived by his nephew, John F. (Mary Margaret) Scanlan, Jr; great niece, Beth Ann Scanlan; great nephews, John F. Scanlan III, Timothy Scanlan and Thomas Scanlan as well as several cousins, close friends and countless families to whom he ministered throughout his career and truly loved.  He was predeceased by his brother, John F. Scanlan.

Msgr. Scanlan's family and friends would like to thank the caregivers and staff at McCauley Residence where he resided for 3 years and St. Joseph Post Acute Care for their care and support during his stay.

Due to recent circumstances, funeral services and interment in Stella Niagara Cemetery will be held privately for the family. A public Memorial Service for will be held at a later date to be announced.
