Nora "Sitto" (Akl) Sowma, 95, of Niagara Falls, NY died on Sunday February 8, 2009 under the care of Niagara Hospice at her residence. Born in Jouret-el-Balout, Lebanon she was the daughter of the late Joseph and May Akl. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred S. Sowma in 1973.
Nora came to Niagara Falls in 1928 where she lived until the present time. From 1928 until 1968 she and her husband owned and operated the former Niagara Tobacco Company in Niagara Falls, NY. Nora was a charter member of Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Niagara Falls. She enjoyed cooking for her family and walking but most of all her life was centered around caring for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Sowma is survived by one daughter May S. Jowdy of Niagara Falls, NY and was predeceased by one daughter Emilyne S. (Joseph N. of Grand Island, NY) Williams and one son Herbert Sowma. Survivors also include eight grandchildren Joseph (Laura) Williams, James Williams, Jerome (Kimberly) Williams, Jon (Heather) Williams, Jeffrey (Marla) Williams, Douglas Jowdy, Vincent (Maria) Jowdy and Gregory (Ann Maley) Jowdy, eighteen great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 3 – 8 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday February 12th at 10 a.m. in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. William Allegretto, C.M. officiating. Everyone please assemble at church. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, Inc., 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
