Norman W. "Nemo" Joseph, 58, of Lewiston, NY passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Albany Stratton V.A. Medical Center after a long battle with liver cancer. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Norman and Joyce Ruth (Smith) Joseph.
Nemo, as he was known to his friends and family, graduated from Niagara Wheatfield High School. He later earned an Associate's Degree in Aviation Science from Central Texas College. On January 19, 1981 he married Teresita L. Joseph in the Philippines.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA-151), one of the oldest squadrons in the U.S. Navy known as the Vigilantes. During Operation Desert Storm, onboard the USS Midway, they were instrumental in the successful liberation of Kuwait. Norm always expressed a lot of pride in his Navy career as an aviation machinist's mate first class (AD1)throughout Japan, the Philippines and the United States until he retired in 1994 after more than twenty years of service. He expressed his patriotism and love of country in his daily life.
He went on to be a knowledge base systems engineer working at Sitel and started his own business Space Com Computers after his retirement from the Navy and could often be found helping a friend out with computer problems or working out software solutions.
Norm was known for his kindness. He orchestrated an annual fundraiser at his home called "The Blessing" to promote safety and awareness among bikers to benefit St. George Orthodox Church in Niagara Falls. Norm had a passion for motorcycles and served as secretary of the Niagara County Motorcycle Club as well as a member of the Rising Sun Motorcycle Club while in Japan.Norm was also member of the American Legion in Niagara Falls, NY. Among his greatest pleasures were camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and riding his ATV. He was also an animal lover who shared his home with dogs and cats over the years.
He loved rock and roll, gathering with friends, and his love for life. He had a big heart and was well known by many.
In addition to his wife of thirty five years, Norm is survived by three children Cheryl (Jake) Bushee of Oregon, James Joseph of Tonawanda, NY and Sabrina Joseph of Lewiston, NY; his step daughter Katherine(Michael) Staley of Chicago, his adopted son Ronniefer (Jeanette)Sityar, two step-grandchildren Katrina Staley and Roneth Sityar, one sister Dominique (Michael) Muldoon, nephew Jesse, niece Joanna and many cousins.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 20th from 4 – 7 P.M. at the M. J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY where funeral services will follow at 7 P.M. Interment with Military Honors will be held Thursday, January 21st at 9:00 A.M. in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society or to Veterans Affairs.
