IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Patrick J.
Berrigan, Esq.
March 6, 2021
Patrick J. Berrigan, Esq., 87, of Lewiston, NY was reunited with his Holy Father on March 6, 2021. Just as Pat would have wanted, he passed peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving wife and eight children.
Pat was a devout Catholic and his deep faith guided him in every aspect of his life. He loved, worked and played with the ultimate intensity. His greatest love was his wife of 63 years, Shirley (Snyder) Berrigan, of St. Charles, IL. Pat and Shirley met during his years of law school at Notre Dame. Their special place during courtship was the Notre Dame Grotto, which was completely illuminated in celebration of his life on Saturday evening.
Pat was born November 3, 1933 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, the son of the late Thomas J. Berrigan and Florence (Glynn) Berrigan. Due to his father's position as the Editor of the Niagara Gazette, the family relocated to Lewiston in 1950, and yet his bonds to his Canadian family and love for hockey lived on. Pat was the third of six children: Paul (late Loretta) Berrigan of Circleville, OH; Thomas (Marjorie) Berrigan of Hilton Head Island, SC; Mary (James) MacKenzie of Lewiston; and Michael (Phyllis) Berrigan of Alexandria, VA. Pat also had a brother, Adrian Berrigan, who died in childhood.
He graduated from Holy Cross College in 1954 (Cum Laude) and earned his law degree from Notre Dame Law School in 1957 (recipient of the Harry English Award for Outstanding Senior). He demonstrated a lifetime of love and loyalty to the Fighting Irish, a legacy now extending three generations.
Pat and Shirley were married on July 6, 1957. They started their life together in Augusta, GA where Pat served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959 at Fort Gordon.
Pat joined Runals, Broderick, Shoemaker, Rickert, Berrigan & Dougherty law firm in Niagara Falls in 1959. He withdrew in 1978 to establish his own practice, which eventually became Berrigan, Perlman & Gabriele. Pat was regarded as one of the foremost authorities of Labor Law in Western New York. He served as General Counsel to Innovative Municipal Products for over 20 years. Pat was known as a fiery advocate for his clients, while retaining his reputation in the legal community as one of the most ethical attorneys in Niagara County. He continued to practice law until his retirement in 2019.
Pat and Shirley were blessed with eight children: Carolyn Berrigan (Cory Laws) of Herndon, VA.; Debbie Clark (Kevin) of Pendleton, NY; Patrick J. Berrigan, Jr. (Nancy) of The Woodlands, TX; Sue Corieri (Roy) of Brewerton, NY; Ann Marie Bower (Martin) of Brewerton, NY; Mary Davis (Scott) of Ashburn, VA.; James Berrigan (Julie) of Lewiston, NY; and Tara DellaDonna of Brewerton, NY. He also had son-in-laws Joseph Severo (deceased) and Stephen DellaDonna. Pat cherished his role as 'Grandpa' to his 20 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Pat also enjoyed his role as Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Pat gave to his community throughout his life and served on many boards including the Niagara University Advisory Board, Niagara Falls Chamber of Commerce, Y.M.C.A and Niagara Falls Country Club. Pat dedicated decades of service to Mount St. Mary's Hospital, in numerous positions, including President of the Lay Advisory Board and Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors.
Pat loved the time he spent with family and friends playing hockey, golfing, fishing and traveling throughout the world. Pat and Shirley created a lifetime of memories through family vacations and adventurous global cruises. He was an exceptional hockey goalie who played between the pipes until he was 74. Pat founded the Damn Yankees Oldtimers Hockey Club. His teammates fondly referenced him as "Red-Lite." He was a long-standing member of the Niagara Falls Country Club, and just last summer, he yet again shot his age twice.
