Peter Mele, 94, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY. Born in Spezzano della Sila Calabria, Italy he was the son of the late Orlando and Rosa (Pantusa) Mele.
Peter served in the Italian Army and immigrated to the United States in 1938. He resided in Niagara Falls, NY for the remainder of his life, where he became a shoe repairman and founder of the well known Cinderella Shoe Shop on Hyde Park Boulevard retiring after forty two years. Peter was a member of the Niagara Falls Old Timers, with whom he served on the Board of Directors and was the recipient of the Pep DiRamio Service Award in 1992. He was an avid gardener and a world traveler.
Mr. Mele is survived by his daughter Stella (Fernando) Cipollitti of Niagara Falls, NY and was predeceased by one daughter Sharon Brinda Mele. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Jennifer (Carmen Jr.) Caggiano, Joanna (Dr. Michael) Merletti, Jeffrey Brinda and John (Heather) Cipollitti, eight great- grandchildren Carmen III and Charon Caggiano, Anthony and Bailey Brinda, Catherine and Lauren Merletti, Ben and Anna Cipollitti, his favorite nephew Leonard (Maria) Mele of Sydney, Australia and several other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by two brothers Biaso Mele and Francesco Mele.
Friends may call on Friday from 3 – 7 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where funeral services will begin on Saturday February 28th at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY.
