Obituary
Philip J. Paonessa, 96, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Born in Peekskill, NY he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Maria (DeSantis) Paonessa.
Philip moved to Niagara Falls, NY as a young child with his family and attended local schools. He graduated from Bryant and Stratton Business Institute in Buffalo, NY in 1937, and Niagara University in 1951. On September 3, 1945 Philip married Florence (Presti) Paonessa in Niagara Falls, NY. Philip was employed as an auditor for the Niagara Frontier Milk Marketing Area, (a State agency), now called Western New York Milk Marketing, for almost forty years, and retired in 1982 as its Market Administrator. Philip was also a Licensed Public Accountant and enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service. He was a member of the Independent Association of Accountants of New York and the National Society of Accountants.
Philip was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church since 1955, where he served as an usher spokesman and a member of their St. Vincent de Paul Society. Philip was also a volunteer Tax Aide with AARP for over twenty five years. In 2007 he was the recipient of the "Cittadini Speciali" (Special Citizen) Award given by the Pine Avenue Business Association, and in 2009 Philip was honored at the St. Vincent de Paul Society District Jubilee.
In addition to his wife of sixty eight years, Philip is survived by a daughter Maria Ann Martel of Geneva, IL; two sons Joseph (Cindy) Paonessa of Paradise Valley, AZ and Philip (Cathie) Paonessa of Danbury, CT; eight grandchildren, thirteen great- grandchildren and his loving cat Tiger. He was also predeceased by one sister Rose (late John) Candella.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. at the
M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. The Knights of Columbus will offer a prayer service Tuesday at 6:30 PM at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 16th at 10 a.m. at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Duane Klizek officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
