Obituary

Philip J. Zanghi, 96, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away Friday January 29, 2010 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY. Born in Mt. Morris, NY he was the son of the late Frank and Josephine (Muscarella) Zanghi. On Febraury 7, 1932 he married Mary (Battaglia) Zanghi in Cleveland, OH. They celebrated 75 years of marriage and together they found a friendship, raised a family, and built a beautiful marriage. His devoted wife predeceased him on October 31, 2007.

Philip worked as a retort operator at the National Carbon Company in Niagara Falls, NY and retired in the mid-1970's.
After retiring, Philip and his wife began a very active career in volunteerism and community involvement. Together they conducted weekly bingo games at Spallino Towers and Wrobel Towers in Niagara Falls, NY. He attended many city council meetings where he was a strong advocate for the concerns of the seniors. Philip served both on the Board of Directors for HANCI and Center City Development Corporation. He also was a member of the Niagara Golden Stars, St. Joseph's Senior's Club and former President of Mt. Carmel's Seniors Club. He and his late wife were honored for their many hours of leading various Senior Citizen groups and activities. Philip was the recipient of the Pine Avenue Business Association's Cittadini Speciale Award. Most importantly his life centered on his family and friends. Special interests of Philip's were music and dancing with his life partner Mary.


Mr. Zanghi is survived by two daughters Angela (late Ernest) Gedeon and Carol (late Thomas) Schrader, both of Niagara Falls, NY; six grandchildren Lauren (Kenneth) Palmer-Ostertag, Lisa (John) Chester, Lynn Velasco, Jody (Carl) Brown, Michelle (Nicholas) Catanzaro, Philip (Karen) Schrader; eight great-grandchildren, Otis, Nicholas Jr., Albert, Anthony, Vincenzo, Seth, Alec and Gabriel; one great-great-grandson, Vincent, a brother Samuel (Ernestine) Zanghi of Pawling, NY, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter Josephine (Joseph of Niagara Falls, NY) Jozwik; two sisters Mary (late Leonard) Muscarella, Rose (late Chris) Franchow and one brother Ignatius "Stretch" (late Jane) Zanghi.

Friends may call on Monday from 3-6 P.M. at the M.J. COLUCCI AND SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 2, 2010at 10 AM in Holy Family Jesus, Mary & Joseph Parish at St. Joseph's Church 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, N.Y. with Rev. Stewart Lindsay O.S.F.S. officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Entombment in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
