Obituary

Philomena (Pope) Costanzo, 94, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on August 18, 2026, under the compassionate care of the staff at Elderwood of Grand Island, as well as Hospice Buffalo.

Born in Medina, NY on August 5, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Carmella (D’Amico) Pope. She graduated from Medina High School in 1949. Following graduation, she accepted a position with the N.Y. State Department of Labor, and eventually took a position with the Social Security Administration in Niagara Falls, NY, where she forged lifelong friendships with Elaine (Fadel) S’dao, Josie Fera, Toni Fera, Louise Martin, and Ann Palazzo.

Soon afterward, she met and married the love of her life, the late Joseph P. Costanzo Jr., on June 20, 1953 at St. Mary’s Church in Medina, NY. In celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, they renewed their vows at St. Mary of the Cataract Church in Niagara Falls, followed by a wonderful celebration with family and friends.

After devoting herself to raising her five children, Philomena returned to the workforce as a medical secretary for ten years before retiring to spend more time with her husband.

She was a past member of the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club Auxiliary and participated in many fundraising events.

Philomena enjoyed visiting the casino, playing cards, baking, hosting backyard cookouts, and most importantly, spending time with her family.

A woman of deep faith, she had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and was always praying and asking God to watch over those she loved.

Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family will be remembered by all who knew her.

Philomena is survived by her children, Catherine (Angelo) Grande, Lawrence (Mary) Costanzo, Theresa (Philip) Nanula, Christine (John) Ferraro, and Joseph (Rachelle) Costanzo III.

She was the cherished grandmother of Alex (Kaitlyn) Grande, Anthony Grande, Stephanie Costanzo, Gregory (Brian) Nanula, Vincent (Joanna) Nanula, Philip Nanula Jr., Nicholas (Carly) Ferraro, and Nicole Ferraro, and the proud great‑grandmother of four great‑grandchildren. She is also survived by several loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings Vienna (Russell) Gullo, Mary (Carmen) Fragnito, Agnes (Herman) Iorio, Josephine (Angelo) Berti, Nazarene Pope, Gregory (Joann) Pope, and Rocco (Mary Emma) Pope.

There will be no prior visitation. Philomena’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 24 at 11 AM at St. Leo’s Church, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14304. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
