Richard T. Kosut, 83, of North Tonawanda, NY, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at Buffalo General Hospital. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Stephen and Margaret (Shufran) Kosut and the beloved husband of the late Carol A. Kosut, whom he married on December 28, 1990.

Richard graduated from Bishop Duffy High School in 1961. He continued his education at Dixie State College, earned his Bachelor’s degree from Utah State University, and later received his Master’s degree in education from Buffalo State College.

Richard proudly served the community as a science teacher at Niagara-Wheatfield High School for 33 years, retiring in 2000. He also dedicated countless hours as an umpire and referee for youth sports.

Richard was an avid traveler who explored Europe, Hawaii, and the United States from coast-to-coast countless times. He was a classic car enthusiast, and earned numerous awards at local car shows. In recent years, he cherished his weekly dinners with his “St. Theresa's Group”, a close-knit group of friends whose bond began in childhood.

Richard was a man of deep Catholic faith, which he expressed through his generosity, curiosity, and genuine appreciation for those around him.

Richard is survived by his children, Amy (Dr. Edward) Petrow of Tucson, AZ, Stephen Kosut of Buffalo, NY and Andrew Kosut of Lewiston, NY; his step-children, Barbara (Kevin) Hughes of North Tonawanda, NY, John (Lynn) Blair of Clarence, NY and Laurie (Benny) Cordero of Grand Island, NY; his grandchildren, Alison and Grace Petrow, Dr. Kevin II (Lisa) and Sean Hughes, Rachael and Ashley Blair, and Emily and Natalyn Cordero; his siblings, Stephen (Pat) Kosut of Lockport, NY, Margaret “Peg” (late Ray) Curtis of Tucson, AZ, Jack Kosut of Richmond, VA, Judy (Eugene) Zambarda of East Amherst, NY and Dan (MaryAnn) Kosut of Charlottesville, VA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Richard was sadly predeceased by his grandson, Connor Hughes and his brother, George (Pat) Kosut.

Visitation will be on Friday, June 5 from 4 – 7 PM at M.J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, followed by Richard’s Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Leo’s Church, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. Interment will follow in White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery, Amherst, NY. Memorial offerings may be made to Catholic Charities or Niagara Hospice.
