Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather
Robert Paton (Bert) Mathieson passed away on September 21, 2009 at the age of 88. Bert was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and came to the United States at the age of three with his parents, the late Hugh and Jessie (Paton) Mathieson. He graduated from Trott Vocational with a diploma in Chemistry and began working for DuPont in 1941. He retired in 1983 after 42 years of service.
He was a Sergeant for the 392nd Fighter Squadron during the European Theater of Operations during WWII. He served in Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland and earned several service awards including a Distinguished Unit Badge, E.A.M.E. Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.
An avid believer in the lessons taught by the Boy Scouts, Bert was an assistant Scout Master for Troop 837 for many years. Bert also loved to play golf and once aced the 5th hole on the white nine at Hyde Park. He also enjoyed the Bills and the Sabres, walking his "grandogs", gardening, and bowling.
Bert is survived by his wife of 56 years Jean (Sirianni) and was the father of Michael (Linda), Christopher (Kelley), Kathleen (Jeffrey) Gattie, and Robert. He was the grandfather of Meeghan, Zachrey, Melissa, Tristian, Hugh, Levi, and the late Jessie.
He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Bert was predeceased by his twin brother George, and his brother Hugh (Mary).
There will be no prior visitation. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00Am Friday, September 25, 2009 at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, at St. Leo's Church, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14304 with the Rev. James Fugle officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston, NY with Military Honors.
Flowers gratefully declined. Donations can be made to either of Bert's chosen charities. This fund provides veterinary care for abused and neglected English Bull Terriers in the Niagara Region. The Boy Scouts of America (The Greater Niagara Frontier Council Campership Fund, 2860 Genesee Street, Buffalo, NY 14225). This fund provides assistance to boys from low income families so they can join the scouts.
