Roy Spina Sr., 88, of Lewiston, NY died on Sunday October 16, 2011 at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Ambrozio and Theresa (Palumbo) Spina.
Roy was a lifelong resident of the Niagara Falls area and attended local schools. During World War II he served in the United States Navy aboard destroyers USS Davison, USS Texas, and USS Shubrick from January 6, 1941 until his honorable discharge on December 11, 1946. On February 11, 1950 he married Mega (Assito) Spina in Mt. Hope, West Virginia. From 1947 until 1972 Roy and his brothers owned and operated Spina Brothers Trucking in Niagara Falls, NY. Following that he worked as chief master mechanic for the Albert Elia Construction Company and later Sevenson Construction until retiring in 2010. During that time Roy travelled to Nicaragua from 1972 until 1979 to maintain the heavy equipment used to assist in the rebuilding following an earthquake there. Roy will be remembered as a hardworking family man.
In addition to his wife of sixty one years, Roy is survived by three daughters Cheryl (Thomas) Bradshaw of Ransomville, NY; Linda Bruno of Grand Island, NY and Terri (late Romeo) Bax (Gary Schmitt) of Niagara Falls, NY and was predeceased by one son Roy Spina, Jr. He is also survived by six grandchildren Melissa (Scott) Meogrossi, Tiffany (Rex) Chandler, Daniel Bax, Thomas Roy (Melissa) Bradshaw, Nicole Bax and Danielle Bruno, nine great-grandchildren, one great- great-grandson, several nieces and nephews and his loving pet Cokie. He was also predeceased by 3 brothers Pasquale (late Anna) Spina, Arthur (late Clair) Spina Sr., Nat Spina and one sister Ida Alonge.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. at the M.J.COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where services will be held on Thursday October 20th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Michael Zuffoletto officiating. Military honors will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
