Obituary

After a long battle with COPD (Emphysema), Sally A. Zaccarella, of Lewiston, NY, passed peacefully on September 28, 2024, in her 75th year of life, under the loving care of her granddaughters, Alyssa and Juliana, as well as the kind nurses at Niagara Hospice in Lockport, NY.

Sally was born December 16, 1949 in Welland, Ontario, Canada to the late Earl and Leatha (Moore) McCauley. She graduated from Eastdale Secondary School, the youngest in her class of 1967. Always her daddy's little "Suzy-Q", Sally grew to be a kind, considerate, intelligent, fun-loving woman in a community where her family has thrived for over 200 years.

In 1968, while out with friends in Niagara Falls, NY, they heard about a "singing bartender" and decided they had to go see him… Tony was his name. And after hearing Tony's smooth vocal stylings, her fate was sealed. They married the following August of 1969 and recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

After the birth of their two children, Andrea and Anthony (TJ/Tony), Sally chose to reenter the workforce, becoming Comptroller at the Aquarium of Niagara Falls, where she worked for 30 years. During that time, she also obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Accounting through the Empire State Program. Her incredible work ethic permeated every aspect of her life and was a shining example to her children, who eventually passed that same work ethic onto their children.

Sally's interests and hobbies varied over the years. She loved to read when she was younger. She also played in a softball league as a catcher. As far as music goes…Sally loved music and dancing, but couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Andrea liked to say that she created her own harmony. Perhaps that's why she was so drawn to Tony's beautiful voice.

Early in their marriage, Tony, wanting to share his passion with his wife, taught herto bowl. Everyone knew Sally and Tony Zaccarella at Beverly Lanes and Thunder Bowl (now Rapids Bowling Center). She had quite a unique approach and back-up swing, so much so that if you didn't see her throw the ball, you would think she was a lefty.Eventually, Sally achieved a perfect game of 300 with a 700 series, which she was incredibly proud of.

Sally loved spending time with family and friends. Having moved to Niagara Falls, NY to start a new life with Tony, she happily embraced the Italian-American culture of her new family, learning to make sauce from scratch from her mother-in-law…because of course, you can't expect an Italian to eat jarred sauce… lol.

However, she also made sure to keep close contact with her family back in Canada, taking regular trips to visit her parents and her brother, as well as various aunts, uncles and cousins. She wanted to ensure that her children grew up knowing both sides of their family. The yearly Moore family reunions in Cook's Mills, outside of Welland, were always happy occasions.

Sally enjoyed hosting Christmas parties for friends, yearly trips to Las Vegas, Saturday family dinners and spending time with her mom, her best friend. She also enjoyed her sitcoms, playing solitaire and doing crossword puzzles. Most of all though, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching them grow; teaching, sharing, helping, protecting.

Anyone who knew Sally loved her. She was always generous to those she loved, honest and considerate, stubborn, fair to a fault and, to some, a bit formidable.

Sally is survived by her loving husband Tony, daughter Andrea (Dave Draper), son Tony (Jillian), grandchildren Alyssa (Shane Coss) Zaccarella, Anthony (Nicole) Zaccarella, Juliana (Devin Jones) Zaccarella and Matthew Zaccarella, great-grandchildren Clara Coss, Myles Coss and Isla Zaccarella, brother John (Nancy) McCauley, sister-in-law Rosalie Baio(late Joseph) and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and brother-in-law, she was also predeceased by her mother-in-law Mary (Leone) Zaccarella and father-in-law Joseph Zaccarella.
