Salvatore J. Rizzo, 80, of Niagara Falls, NY went into Eternal rest on Sunday, September 1, 2013. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Scarlatta) Rizzo.
Sal was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1950. He later attended Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, NY where he earned an Associate's Degree in 1975. In 1948 Sal joined the State Ward Disaster Military Corp. and in 1949 the NY Army Reserves National Guard which he served in until retiring in 1969 as 1st Sergeant of Headquarters and Headquarters Co. 1st Battalion 174th Armor. He was employed at the former International Paper Co. in 1950 and in 1951 he began working at Occidental Chemical Co., formerly known as Hooker Chemical Co., both in Niagara Falls, NY until retiring in 1968. He also worked part time at Wrights Plating and later became a part owner of Cataract Metal Finishing in 1968, rising from a laborer to president until retiring in 1997. Sal also enjoyed helping at Koban's restaurant.
On October 17, 1953 he married Antoinette M. (Destino) Rizzo at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Niagara Falls, NY. He was predeceased by her on June 13, 2003. Sal became a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #247 in Niagara Falls, NY in 1969 and rose to Grand Knight in 1988. He also joined the 4th Degree in 1971 and became a Navigator in 1983. Sal actively served on the Board of Directors for thirty years and was a member of the Italian American War Veterans, Post #42.
Sal is survived by his daughters Joanne (John L.) Larratta, Maria Kowalski and Rosemary (Wayne) Rivers all of Niagara Falls, NY and was predeceased by his son Joseph Rizzo. He is also survived by six grandchildren John L. Larratta II, Amber (Scalzo) Patti, Frank Patti, Molly Kowalski, Winston (Katherine) Tichavsky; one sister Mary (late Joseph) St. Jean of Niagara Falls, Ontario and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister Mary (late Dominic) Justiana. A special thank you to our extended family, the Kobans, Frost's and the Sortore's. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to his caregiver, Linda Marie.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. The Knights of Columbus Council #247 will conduct a service at 3 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday September 6th at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Cataract Church, 259 Fourth Street, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Jacek Mazur officiating. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
