Obituary

Sarah Gloria DeMiglio, 87, of Niagara Falls, formerly known as Sr. Michael David, MSOLA, Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa, died January 15, 2021 in Niagara Falls Memorial Center. Born in Ft. Edwards, NY, she was the daughter of the late Rocco and Frances (Pingatore) De Miglio.

Sarah graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1952. In 1957, she entered the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa whose Motherhouse is located in Algeria, North Afreica.  After spending six months as a Postulante in Franklin, Pa.  Sarah then went on to Bellevielle, Ill for Novitiate for eighteen months taking her first vows in August 1959.  After studying French in Montreal, Canada she went to Holland and then to London, Great Britain for Theology Studies.

Her missionary work began in 1962 in Kashozi, Bukoba,Tanzania, East Africa for five years teaching women and girls cooking, sewing, reading and writing. Another two years was spent in Nivarya near Lake Victoria where she taught young girls and boys to cook and clean houses so they could earn money in out-stations cooking for Priests and Brothers.

In 1975 Sarah was sent to Rome, Italy for twelve years as a driver for her Congregation and worked in obtaining visas, passports, air and train tickets for the sisters coming and returning from Africa and Europe.

After retiring she returned to Niagara Falls and worked at HANCI as a Personal Care Aid, and as a cook at their Trott Day Care Center.

Sarah was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church serving as a Eucharistic Minister until its Closure in 2008. She then became a parishioner of St. John de La Salle Parish where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Rosary Alter Society, Senior Server and Member of the Parish Council. In addition to her work with her church she was a member of Re-United Seniors at Volare Lodge, First Saturday Women's Group and she volunteered at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Home. In her leisure time Sarah enjoyed scrapbooking, painting, baking and cooking.

Sarah is survived by her siblings Loretta (late Joseph) Downie, Anthony (Antoinette) DeMiglio, Ann (John) Barry and Mary Ann (late Steven) Ventry along with several beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Agatha (late Michael) Lucatra.

Visitation will be on Saturday, February 6 from 9 – 10:00 A.M. in St. John de La Salle Church, 8477 Buffalo Ave. Niagara Falls, NY , where Sarah's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M.
