Obituary

Shirley Murgia, 88, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2026, at her residence.

Born in Niagara Falls, she was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Capizzi) Rizzo. A lifelong resident of the city, Shirley was a proud graduate of Niagara Falls High School.

On November 30, 1957, she married the love of her life, Joseph R. Murgia, in St. Joseph Church. Together they built a life centered on family, love and devotion to one another.

Shirley began working at a young age with Loane & Reiger Insurance Agency and later spent many years employed at the former Falls Greenhouse. She also took great pride in volunteering for Francine DelMonte's New York State Assembly campaign during the early 2000s, contributing her time and energy to causes she believed in.

A devout Catholic, Shirley was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph Church, where she served at the parish food pantry through the St. Joseph Outreach Center, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Shirley was an avid reader who especially enjoyed the novels of Danielle Steel and amassed an extensive collection of her books. She also found great enjoyment in completing word searches. Shirley had a love for flowers and enjoyed tending to her garden.

Above all, Shirley devoted her life to her family. She treasured every moment shared with her loved ones and cherished the countless memories created over the years, especially those spent with her grandchildren. Her kindness, gentle spirit, and unwavering love will be greatly remembered.

Shirley is survived by her two children, David R. Murgia and Deborah (Joseph) LaGamba; her loving grandchildren, Michael (Brianna Carrier) LaGamba, Stephen LaGamba and Matthew LaGamba; two cherished great-grandchildren, Abigail LaGamba and Nora Carrier-LaGamba; her special nephew, Gary DeMunda, as well as several other dear nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Joseph and Anna, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Joseph in March of 2026; and her two siblings, Carmella Fiorello and Barbara (late Joseph) DeMunda.

Visitation will be on Saturday, November 7 from 9:30 – 10:00 AM in St. Joseph’s Church, 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY, where Shirley’s Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
