Obituary

Stanley Yachwan, 87, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2017, at Northgate Health Care Facility. Stanley was born on June 18, 1930 in Nanticoke Pennsylvania to Ewstachy (Stanley) and Melania (Yazwinsky) Yachwan. After graduating from Nanticoke High School in 1949, Stanley worked at the Horn and Hardart Automat Restaurant in New York City with his brother John before moving to Detroit to work at the Lincoln-Mercury automotive plant. He had tryouts with both the New York Giants and Philadelphia Athletics baseball teams in the early 1950s.

Stanley moved to Niagara Falls in 1951 and began working at the International Paper Company until 1965. He also worked for a short time at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and finally for Carborundum (BP) until his retirement in 1996.He met his wife, Marie, in 1951 at Lincoln's Department Store where she worked in the office and would cash his paychecks. They were married on November 12, 1955 at the former Sacred Heart Church. After losing their first-born son at the age of 6 weeks old, Stanley and his wife went on to raise their two children, Suzanne and Kevin and was a loving Grampa to his grandson, John.

Stanley enjoyed bowling and was an avid baseball fan, especially of the New York Yankees. During his life, Stanley actively participated in several baseball leagues. He played on the New York State winning team of the Simon Pure League, The International Paper Mill, Carborundum, and The Over The Hill Gang. Stanley was inducted into the Niagara Falls Old Timer's Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He also enjoyed doing yard work and home improvement projects as well as spending time with his family.

He was a longtime member of the former Sacred Heart Church where he served on the Home School Committee and was a member of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society.He was also active for many years with the "Mission Program" at local churches.
Stanley is survived by his children Suzanne (Yachwan) D'Aloise, Dr. Kevin G. Yachwan, D.D.S., a grandson, Dr. John D. D'Aloise, PharmD, and several nieces and nephews. Stanley was predeceased by his wife, Marie (Sykes) Yachwan in March 2015, and one son, Stanley Joseph Yachwan. He was also predeceased by brothers Andrew (late Eleanor) Yachwan and John Yachwan, and sisters Anne (late Russell) Skordy and Mary (late Edward) Churnetski.

Stanley and his family appreciated the wonderful care he received by the doctors and staff during his time at Northgate HealthCare Facility. Donations in his memory can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 13th from 4 – 8 P.M. at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where funeral services will begin on Thursday at 9:15 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. at St. Raphael Parish, 3840 Macklem Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to National Parkinson Disease Foundation, of Western, New York 300 International Drive Suite 224 Williamsville, NY 14221.
