Verna G. Maietta, 90, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully at Schoellkopf Health Center on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Born in Wood River, IL, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Flossie (Atchely) Gerl.

Verna was raised in Illinois and graduated from East Alton Wood River Community High School in 1947. She obtained her Nursing degree from Alton Memorial Hospital in 1950, and met her future husband, Frank L. Maietta while he was attending college in Illinois. Verna later moved to Niagara Falls and married Mr. Maietta on April 23, 1955 at St. Joseph's Church.

Verna was employed as a Registered Nurse for over 40 years at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center prior to retiring and joining the NFMMC Retirees Club. She was a longtime parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church where she was also a member of the Caritas Group and the parish bowling league. Verna was very family orientated and especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Maietta was predeceased by her husband on August 9, 2010. She is survived by her children, Frank P. (Teresa) Maietta and Madeline M. Amoretti; two grandchildren, Nicholas F. (Brianna) Maietta and Julianna M. (Ethan) Duncan; her great-grandchild, Lorenzo Maietta and was predeceased by one great-granddaughter Maria Maietta. She is also survived by one sister, Judith (late Paul) Blackburn, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings Betty (late Fred) Bugg, George (Ann) Gerl, and Floyd (Donna) Gerl; and was the sister-in-law of the late Mary (late Louis) Nicolette and Larry (Doris) Maietta.

Due to recent circumstances, funeral services will be private for the family. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. A public Memorial Service will be held a later date to be announced.
