Virginia A. “Ginny” Sukmanowski, 69, of Grand Island, NY, passed away on August 1, 2026, at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Yazbeck T. and Nancy J. (Sahagian) Sarkees.

Ginny was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Buffalo State College and her Master’s Degree in Education from the University at Buffalo, achievements that reflected her lifelong dedication to learning and to the children she served.

In 1984, she married John P. Sukmanowski, Jr. at Our Lady of Lebanon Church, beginning a loving partnership that spanned 42 years.

For 35 years, Ginny was employed by the Niagara Falls Board of Education as a Special Education Teacher, working with kindergarten through fifth grade students at several schools, including 66th Street and Hyde Park Elementary. She was known for her patience, her compassion, and her commitment to helping every child reach their fullest potential. Her impact on students, families, and colleagues remains immeasurable.

In addition to her husband, Ginny is survived by her children, Peter Sukmanowski, John Sukmanowski, Thomas (Katrina) Sukmanowski, Sarah Sukmanowski, and Paul Sukmanowski; her grandchildren, Kellie, Gabby, Eliana, and Grace; her brothers, Ameen (Rosalind) Sarkees and Yazbeck (Nancy A.) Sarkees; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Private interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY, was held for the family. If desired, memorial offerings may be made to a GoFundMe https://gofund.me/fcedf7dda to support the creation of a memorial bench and flower pot in Ginny’s memory at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
