Warren C. White, 88 , of Niagara Falls, NY died on August 19, 2011 at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY.
Warren entered the United States Army in April, 1943 where he attended basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In September of 1943, he was transferred to Rucker, Alabama, where he was assigned to the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion and trained in full operations of the 4.2 inch artillery mortar and battlefield communications. In January of 1944 he embarked from Patrick Henry, West Virginia aboard the USS Mann and arrived in Casa Blanca, Africa and than went on to Naples, Italy.
In Naples he had Orders to ship out on the LST-422, which was a ship leased to Great Britain and was captained and crewed by British personnel. The ship was filled with arms, loaded to capacity with m-3 half tracks, jeeps, ambulances and other vehicles, it also stored gasoline and phosphorus mortar rounds, the ship carried 454 Americans of the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion and 29 British Sailors. Personnel boarded the ship in alphabetical order, the ship was deemed full by the time they arrived at the letter "v" and Warren was Ordered to stand by for the next available ship. The LST-422 encountered heavy seas with twenty to thirty foot waves and force eight gale winds. Twelve miles off shore of Naples, the ship was blown off course into a known mine area, where it encountered a mine, and exploded. All members of the 83rd aboard were lost along with the British crew.
Warren was than attached to an Army Rangers division. They landed on the beach at Anzio, where he was assigned the job of forward observer to seek out enemy coordinates for accurate placement of mortar fire. On the 1st of June, 1944, Warren was severely wounded with shrapnel wounds to the feet, left leg, back and head by enemy artillery fire. He spent approximately 6 months in hospital at Naples, when released from hospital, he caught up to the Ranger Battalion, where they continued towards Germany. In Austria, he received shrapnel wounds to the leg, lower back, second degree burns and hearing loss, he was attended to on the front and continued on with the ranger unit. He fought on until his unit reached the outskirts of Berlin, where they were ordered to stand down while the Russians entered the City. He was Honorably discharged on December 19, 1945 with 5 campaign stars and the Purple Heart Award. He is a true hero that loved his God and Country and will be sorely missed by friends and family.
Warren was born on the 16th of March 1923, in Couklinville, NY, son of Charles and Zelpha (Bovee) White, he grew up in the Adirondack's . He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Florence (Ventrilla) and sons; Kenneth (Annette), Franklin (Susan) and Joseph (Dawn). Grandfather of 6 grandchildren and 6 great grand children. Father of adored precious child and beloved deceased son Charles James White, dear brother of deceased sisters; Ila, Francis, and Marguerite. Leaving 2nd family of much cared for brothers, sisters and next of kin.
A private military burial service was held by the family at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Lewiston, NY.
