Obituary

Whitney Wade Mallam, 81, of Lewiston, NY died of heart failure on Friday, June 25, 2021. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on September 1, 1939 to Catherine Whitney Mallam and James Wade Mallam, he was a graduate of the former DeVeaux School in Niagara Falls and Hobart College in Geneva, NY. He received his law degree at the University at Buffalo School of Law in 1964 and practiced law in Western New York for 55 years.

Whit was a family law clerk and the confidential law clerk to the late Honorable William L. Kellick for many years, which led him to specialize in family law. He found great satisfaction in working with people who needed guidance through their most difficult days. Whit enjoyed the diversity of clients and learned much from their life experiences. He began his practice in his father's law office, later forming a partnership with David J. Mansour, Esq. and establishing the firm Mallam, Mansour and Hager. He was a member of the New York State Bar Association and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In the 1960's and early 1970's Whit was an aide to the Honorable Earl W. Brydges, the Majority Leader of the State Senate, as his representative on the New York State Crime Commission.

Whit married the former Bonnie Salsbury, of Utica, NY in 1960 and they added four children to their family.

Whit had many interests and hobbies, but the times he enjoyed most were birdwatching and collecting model trains. He described himself as a "Rail Fan" and was a longtime member of the Niagara Orleans Model Railroad Engineers. He especially enjoyed public exhibits of the members' working layouts. Whit's children were the beneficiaries of his love of circuses and carnivals. He was a member of the New York State Showpeoples Association and had many friends and clients among the showpeople whose lives and work he found fascinating.

Whit was deeply proud of his hometown.  He was the 6 th generation of the Whitney family of Niagara Falls and was a direct descendent of Brigadier General Parkhurst Whitney who brought his family to the Niagara Frontier in 1805 and ran the famous Cataract House. Whit's pride in his hometown led him to serve his community in many ways over his lifetime. As a young man, Whit worked at the Niagara Falls State Park during many summer seasons and later in life he became a volunteer for the Niagara Falls Greeters Program, Fort Niagara, and Artpark. He was a longtime member of the Niagara Falls Rotary Club, and a board member of Family and Children's Services of Niagara and the Interfaith Housing Corporation. Whit was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church where he served as Warden and Vestryman for many years. He served as a Trustee for the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for 28 years and continued to serve in leadership roles, including as Chair of the Performance Improvement for Patient Safety Committee, until his death. Recently Whit also served on the administrative boards of Historic Oakwood Cemetery and Riverdale Cemetery. These affiliations led to meaningful connections with the community he loved.

The most important part of his life was being a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Bonnie, Whit is survived by three daughters, Catherine, of Havertown, PA; Laura (Joe) Barefoot, of Raleigh, NC, and Elizabeth (Tim) Hare of Fuquay-Varina, NC; five grandchildren, CJ Barefoot, Sarah Joslin, Jonathan Mallam, Elizabeth Joslin, and Olivia Barefoot. He was predeceased by his son James D. Mallam and his brother David D. Mallam. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Joanne Mallam, Judith Sills, and Rose Salsbury, and brother-in-law Daniel Salsbury; cousins, nieces, and nephews; and dear friends Diana and Alastair McGregor and their family.

Family and friends will be received from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church at 140 Rainbow Blvd. Niagara Falls, NY. A memorial service will follow immediately at 12:00 PM in the church.  Interment will be private.
