Wilbert 'Willie' Maule, 81 of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Saturday September 15, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family while under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Cirillo 'Jerry' and Rosalia (Sannicolo) Maule. He married Dolores A. (Kuklis) Maule on October 16, 1965 in Niagara Falls, NY.
Willie attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School in 1949 where he was a standout member of their football team. He later played semi-professional football as a quarterback in the WNY Semi-Pro Conference and ended his playing career with the Niagara Falls Citizens. Afterwards, he continued to work with teams as a manager. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 during the Korean War, and was stationed in ULM Germany with the 110th Infantry Division until his honorable discharge in 1954. Willie was employed at Moore Business forms in Niagara Falls, NY in the press department and transferred with Moore, to Manchester, NH where he worked as an instructor-foreman. Mr. Maule returned with his family to the Niagara Falls area in 1978, and was employed with Niagara Falls Business Forms until his retirement in 1995.
Willie's love of sports went beyond playing and watching football. He also played softball and basketball while working at Moore in the Industrial League, participated in bowling leagues in both Niagara Falls and New Hampshire, and following his retirement joined the Niagara Falls Retired Men's Golf League. When his son played baseball and football, he was active in the Hyde Park Little Leagues, serving as treasurer, and the Niagara Falls High School Boosters. In recognition of all his accomplishments, Willie was inducted into the Niagara Falls Old Timers Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. In his leisure time, Willie also enjoyed gardening.
In addition to his wife of forty six years, Mr. Maule is survived by his three children, Janice E. (John S.) Falls, Valerie A. (Steve G.) McQuillan both of Niagara Falls, NY, Joseph M. Maule of Arlington, VA, four grandchildren, Hannah M. Falls, Jack A. Falls, Ashley E. McQuillan and Steven J. McQuillan, three sisters, Aida Dawson of Grand Island, NY, Mollie (late Nick) Czyhura and Eleanor (late Joseph) Wisneski both of Niagara Falls, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by one sister Lena (late Mario 'Bo') Campana.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL 2730 MILITARY ROAD NIAGARA FALLS, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday September 18th at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church 27th Street and Independence Ave. Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Stewart Lindsay O.S.F.S. officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery Niagara Falls, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to Niagara Hospice 4675 Sunset Drive Lockport, NY 14094.
