William Edwin Meyers of the Town of Niagara, NY passed away Sunday, January 28, 2018. William was born on June 13, 1939 in Salem, NY, the son of the late George and Gertrude (Patrick) Meyers. William was raised and educated in Salem and at the age of 17, enlisted in the United States Navy. Bill would go on to serve a 30-year career in the US Navy achieving the rank of Senior Chief Signalman. Bill served aboard several naval vessels during both war and peacetime, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, three tours in Vietnam and Middle Eastern Conflicts. Bill came to the Niagara region after being stationed at the Naval Recruiting District in Buffalo. He rapidly rose above his peers to become a supervisor responsible for recruiting in an area of over 8,000 square miles. The rapidity with which he made this climb was virtually unheard of within the entire Navy Recruiting Command. For this reason, William was awarded the prestigious Admiral Claude V. Rickets Award for Inspirational Leadership, along with numerous other Naval and armed forces awards throughout his career. Bill was also a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Bill took advantage of the GI Bill receiving two degrees from Niagara County Community College. Mr. Meyers was awarded the NYS Medal of Merit by Governor Cuomo and was presented by Senator George Maziarz.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Bill worked in automotive sales for several local dealerships, as well as owned and operated his own automotive aftercare company, Executive Detailing. Bill and his wife became extensive world travelers particularly, aboard cruise ships and camping visiting all seven continents between his travels and Naval career. Bill also had a passion for collecting classic cars as well as hunting and fishing. Bill was also involved in the Boy Scouts, serving as Scout Master for St. Joseph's Troop and was extremely proud of watching his soon achieve Eagle Scout. In his leisure time, he also enjoyed, playing poker and euchre, listening to country and Gospel music.
William is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Joan Patricia (Marrazzo) Meyers, his son William David Meyers, granddaughter, Amber Meyers, two sisters Susan Meyers, Betty (Steven) Jones, brother-in-law of Robert A. (Carol) Marrazzo and Linda (John) Silvernail and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Don, Gary and George Meyers.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 31 st from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for family and friends on Thursday, February 1 st , at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Cataract R.C. Parish, 259 4th St, Niagara Falls, NY. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Entombment with Full Military Honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. Visit mjcoluccifuneralchapel.com for register.
